Volvo C40 Recharge: The new all-electric Volvo C40 Recharge is available in India for an initial price of Rs 61.25 lakh, ex-showroom. Bookings for the C40 Recharge will officially open for consumers on September 5 at 5 p.m. We plan to start delivering sometime next week.
Redesigned as an SUV-coupe, the C40 Recharge is basically the Volvo C40 Recharge. In the first half of 2023 (January to June), sales of the all-electric SUV made up 25% of Volvo’s total sales, according to the company. With the addition of this EV to its lineup, Volvo hopes to increase the percentage of EVs in India to 35% by the following year. The Volvo C40 Recharge is exclusively offered in all-electric configuration, in contrast to the XC40 Recharge, which is also offered in petrol in India.

Volvo C40 Recharge exterior design
With the exception of its steeply raked rear windscreen and roofline with a coupe-like finish at the back, the C40 Recharge shares a similar appearance to its SUV counterpart. The tailboard and tail-lamp assembly have been redesigned as a result; the tail lamps now have new reverse lights and a wider wraparound effect in addition to being much slimmer. In addition, the LED light elements are broken up towards the top rather than being a single, continuous strip like on the XC40 Recharge. In contrast to the SUV, the C40 Recharge’s overall design gives it a much wider stance from the back. The LEDs also protrude onto the tailboard.
Additionally, a new two-part spoiler has been added, one on the roof with a distinctive twin-pod design intended to improve aerodynamics and one on the boot lid that has been blacked out. Furthermore, the C40 Recharge’s rear end appears far sportier than the XC40 Recharge’s, even though the SUV’s bumper is still the same. The sloping roofline has also resulted in a slight redesign of the window line. Pixel LED headlights, which are currently exclusive to the C40 Recharge and not available in any other Volvo in India, are another feature.
The C40 Recharge shares the same other features as its SUV sibling, including the dual-tone 19-inch alloy wheels, the front bumper and hood, the contouring on the doors, and the headlamps with Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lamps. Generous plastic cladding highlights the lower sides of the SUV’s character, while the coupe’s appearance is enhanced by the rising rear window line.
Volvo C40 Recharge interior and features
Inside, the dashboard design is characteristically Volvo and is, logically, the same as that of the XC40 Recharge. The rest of it consists of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wood inlays on the dashboard, and a 9.0-inch portrait-style touchscreen that is positioned between thin AC vents.
Regarding hardware, the C40 Recharge is outfitted with an Android-powered infotainment system that provides instant access to Google Assistant and Maps, as well as a number of Play Store apps that can be accessed through an onboard e-SIM. In addition, it has a 360-degree camera, a wireless phone charger, a panoramic sunroof, connected car technology, a full suite of sensor-based ADAS features including autonomous driving, powered front seats with driver-side memory, heating and cooling, a dual-zone climate control system, and a high-end Harman Kardon sound system. But hidden away in the infotainment screen are the climate control features.
While the SUV’s 452 litres of boot space has been reduced to 413 litres in the C40 Recharge, the 31 litres of trunk space has not changed. The sloping roofline will also have reduced the headroom in the rear seats. Significantly, Volvo states that the C40’s interior is entirely leather-free, keeping with the company’s goal to do away with leather in all of its electric vehicles by 2025 in order to lessen carbon emissions and suffering caused to animals.
Volvo C40 Recharge powertrain, range and specs
The powertrain configuration and foundation are also the same as they were with the XC40 Recharge. The C40 Recharge in India is built on the CMA platform (Compact Modular Architecture) and has two motors, one on each axle. Its 78kWh battery pack allows it to go 530 km on the WLTP cycle or 683 km according to ICAT. It’s interesting to note that, thanks to improved aerodynamics and a newer generation battery, the range has significantly increased over the SUV’s stated 418 km range.
It has all-wheel drive thanks to the two electric motors, which also generate 408 horsepower and 660 Nm of torque. Volvo claims that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, beating the XC40 Recharge by 0.2 seconds. With a 150kW DC charger, the C40 Recharge can fast charge its batteries, reaching 100% capacity in just 27 minutes.
Volvo C40 Recharge rivals
The C40 Recharge is competitively priced below other luxury electric SUVs, such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (Rs 48.47 lakh) and the Kia EV6 (Rs 60.95-Rs 65.95 lakh). Similar to the XC40 Recharge (Rs 56.90 lakh), the C40 is built locally, although it costs Rs. 4.35 lakh more than the SUV model.
