Rivian R1S: A premium three-row SUV version of the R1T pickup vehicle, the 2025 R1S builds upon the same foundation of snarling power, decent off-road ability, upscale interior design, and exterior styling. Major updates have been poured upon the 2025 version across the board, and thus are referred to by Rivian as the “second-generation” R1S. Though, perhaps it would more accurately be called “version 1.5.”
The most notable treatment has, for the most part, been that it now benefits from a more refined suspension set-up, putting to rest many qualms about the unforeseen ride of the first generation. It also features a new 850-horsepower Tri-Motor variant between the existing Dual-Motor and the 1050-horsepower Quad-Motor. Die-hard off-road enthusiasts should thank the R1S for giving it adaptive air suspension with 15 inches of clearance boost. The longest-range R1S charges up to 410 miles, thus reducing charging time.
Since 2022, the R1S has had the novelty feature of comfortably accommodating up to seven people along with their gear inside a cabin worthy of much praise. However, this has snowballed into a competition as more affordable variants such as the Kia EV9 and soon-to-be-launched Hyundai Ioniq 7 enter the scene, not to mention competition from rivals such as Volvo EX90 at the same price.
What’s New for 2025?
For 2025, Rivian introduces a revamped electrical system that shaves off more than 44 pounds of wiring. A new lithium-iron-phosphate battery powers the Standard variant, while the Large and Max batteries have been tweaked for efficiency and range. The Tri- and Quad-Motor models feature newly developed in-house electric motors, and the overall design receives updated wheels, improved graphics in the user interface, and enhanced driver-assist tech.
Google Cast for video streaming, streaming Apple Music, and more are available with the new Connect+ software subscription service, although Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still not available. One-off “California Dune Edition” is an in-house addition, forging the desert-themed appearance along with off-road equipment. Headlights now feature Adaptive Drive Beam tech.

Pricing and Trims
Prices for the 2025 Rivian R1S are expected to start at $78,450 up to $107,700, with the final price depending on the selected variant and features.
- Adventure – $78,450
- California Dune Edition – $105,900
- Premium – $107,700
- Ascend – $107,700
The Ultimate Adventure build, with dual-motors, a large battery, and a 1,200-Watt sound system, would start from $84,700.The Ultra Performance refers especially to the Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor models.
Performance and Powertrains
The Dual Motor setup is the base variant available, producing 553 hp and 610 lb-ft of torque; this can be upgraded with a Performance version pushing the output to 665 hp and 829 lb-ft of torque, respectively. Another recent addition to the series is a Tri-Motor, straddling the performance range between the Dual and Quad while producing 850 hp and 1103 lb-ft. At the epitome levels stands the Quad-Motor, offering phenomenal acceleration off-road and on-road-speed-wise with 1050 hp and 1198 lb-ft on tap.
The four-wheel service imparts a torque thrust to softly emulate locking differentials for serious terrain in the traction system, which is the most important thing for this kind of terrain. Suspension also was updated with new air springs, recalibrated adaptive dampers, and improved hydraulic roll control, all geared towards advancing ride quality and driver confidence.

Speed and Driving Experience
The R1S is blisteringly quick. Rivian claims a sub-2.5-second 0–60 time for the R1T with the Quad-Motor; the R1S may clock just over 2.7 seconds. Even better with a 0-60 mph in just under 3 seconds, the tri-motor rendering is planted for this year. Top speed has also been increased from 110 mph to 130 mph.
Towing, Battery, and Range
Towing capacity remains at 7,700 pounds, and payload capacity is estimated at 1,764 pounds. Three battery options are available:
- Standard – 92.5 kWh, ~270 miles range
- Large – 109.4 kWh
- Battery- size of 141.5 kWh and a range of up to 410 miles (dual motor).
Charging from 10–80% on a DC fast charger takes 30–41 minutes, depending on battery size. Max charging rates are 200 kW for the Standard battery and 220 kW for the larger ones.
Efficiency
This new setup increases efficiency across the board. The Dual-Motor trim now achieves up to 85 MPGe combined, having gained 3 MPGe from 2024. Other trims range between 72 and 84 MPGe. The Tri- and Quad-Motor versions’ official EPA ratings have not yet been released.
Interior and Utility
Inside the R1S, there is a premium cabin experience with fine materials like leather and wood, as well as dual 15.6-inch HD displays. Versatility has also been considered for this, with an enormous front trunk, the seats folding completely flat in both the second and third rows, and 48.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. The heat pump is redesigned for better efficiency when warming the cabin in cold weather.
Infotainment and Features
The 15.6-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard with expandable tiles and controls accessible at all times. The new Connect+ platform enables streaming over Google Cast, with integrations for Spotify, Tidal, and Alexa. Wi-Fi network support for up to eight devices and the new Rivian Premium Audio system are included as well.
Safety and Driver-Assistance
Adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring come standard. More improvements to the suite come with the 2025 refresh, keeping the R1S in step with tech-centric safety.
Conclusion: Rivian R1S
The 2025 iteration of the Rivian R1S represents the vast evolution of the brand’s principal electric SUV. With powertrains to match—including the outrageous 1050-hp Quad-Motor option—a more deft suspension setup, enhanced range, and updated technology, the R1S is now more capable and comfortable to live with.
With robust off-road skills, a spacious and luxurious cabin, and state-of-the-art facilities such as a new heat pump and Adaptive Drive Beam headlamps, it becomes the perfect tool for families and adventurers. While its three-row electric SUV stature is now a tad challenged by newer and more affordable units, the fiercely proud and innovative Rivian, with its determination, shall ensure the R1S stands tall still as one among the very few in the electric luxury SUV segment.
