More power, sharper looks, and upgraded tech make the 2025 Golf R a serious contender among hot hatches—even if it’s missing a bit of the Euro version’s torque.
2025 Volkswagen Golf R: A perfect test could be at the Summit Point Circuit at Summit Point, setting new benchmarks for the 2025 Volkswagen Golf R Raceway in West Virginia. Exiting the esses with some momentum, you can toss the hatchback into a drift thanks to its updated Special and Drift drive modes. The transmission now obeys manual gear selections to give you smoky fishtails and skillful recoveries. VW’s 4Motion AWD system handles the action with poise, staying ready for whatever high-speed maneuver comes next.
This time, it wasn’t us behind the wheel—it was Tanner Foust. Riding shotgun with VW’s pro driver, we watched him masterfully push the Golf R through the track’s roughest zones. Amid those violent jack strokes, the car maintained its stability and poise.
More Power, Same Balanced Punch
With a 328 hp engine, a Turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, it has brute power. We had driven this Euro-spec version earlier, so the brute strength of the Golf R was not a surprise to us. The 295 lb.-ft torque, on the other hand, was retained, 15 ft.-lb.-short of the Euro model’s 310 lb.-ft.
Still, it’s the most powerful production Golf ever. Lighter forged wheels now come standard, shaving four pounds per corner. However, the biggest performance highlight remains the AWD system, which smartly pushes torque to the rear and even fully to either wheel when needed. Updates to the stability system also allow more freedom when driving in aggressive drive modes.
The automatic gearbox boasts seven speeds and is pretty much standard, and quick enough to impress. What’s really fantastic about it is that, though it no longer has a manual option, shifts are incredibly fast and intuitive. This is made more interesting with adaptive dampers, with strong brakes attached. It can therefore drive itself as a proper, mature, high-performance machine. Something is still missing, however: feedback with electric steering, and there is still a hint of understeer when pushed to the limit.

Upgraded Lighting and the Euro Style Pack
As per the GTI regulations, the Golf R comes with adaptive LED headlights with cornering functions and automatic leveling. Also standard, Park Assist Plus is now a hands-free form of parking, which allows throttle control.
For street enthusiasts who want something with a European touch, an optional Style package costing 3,795 Euros is available. About 80 pounds have been set up to cut weight for the model package, which adds an Akrapovič titanium exhaust to the ArtVelours seats, deleting the sunroof and power seat features. This package is designed for enthusiasts who value the performance of the car above comfort frivolities.
Bigger Screen, Better Tech—But Still Touchy
The new 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen is larger and easier to navigate, with more intuitive software. Charging speeds also improve thanks to a 15-watt wireless pad.
Unfortunately, VW stuck with the controversial touch-sensitive dashboard and steering wheel controls. Unlike the 2025 GTI, which reintroduces physical buttons, the Golf R retains sliders, though they are now brighter and more responsive.
Inside, the premium feel continues with Nappa leather, carbon-gray trim, 30-color ambient lighting, and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon system.

Black Edition and Style Changes
With the introduction of a new Black Edition package, the Golf R gets an aggressive yet stealthy look with blackened-out 19-inch wheels, badges, exhaust tips, brake calipers, and other accents. Its interior comes with carbon-fiber trim and can be paired with the Euro Style package for added flash.
Whenever a 2025 Golf R arrived on the scene, a new front bumper design would appear, this one featuring wider intakes, black cap mirrors, and a GTI badge that glows.
The Hot Hatch for the Mature Enthusiast
With no manual transmission and wagon options anymore for the U.S. market, the Golf R still provides razor-sharp performance, techie features, and practical furniture for everyday use. It is a very engaging all-wheel-drive hot hatch that has just enough character to engage the driving enthusiast, although the touch interface needs some refinement.
Even with some weaknesses, the Golf R can easily compete with the Honda Civic Type R’s front-wheel-drive and the Audi S3 sedan’s all-wheel-drive for the year 2025. Pricing could be better, but it is still one of the most well-rounded performance hatchbacks on the market.
