Toyota Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Hilux Make a Triumphant Comeback

Toyota has confirmed that the diesel engines meet Indian regulations, thus lifting the temporary suspension.

Toyota Innova Crysta:A recent nervous moment for Toyota involved the automaker stopping the delivery of the Toyota Innova Crysta, Fortuner, Hilux, and Land Cruiser to India. The reason for this was a power delivery discrepancy that was discovered during an investigation into the domestic emissions testing of its diesel engines in Japan. Toyota has now confirmed that their diesel engines comply with Indian regulations, lifting the temporary suspension.

To clarify for those who are unfamiliar, the diesel engines weren’t defective in and of themselves. Simply put, the ECU that was installed in them during testing was different from the one that would be available on the engines built to production specs and installed in customer vehicles.

Toyota needed to consider the full implications of that new information, even though the current vehicles equipped with the allegedly unsafe diesel engines are still safe to drive. Because of this, there was a brief stop to the dispatch of these impacted vehicles, but it has since been resumed. As a result, the wait times for those Toyota models won’t alter in any way.

When the problem was identified, a Toyota official said the following: “The anomalies relate to the’smoothing’ of torque and power curves, but they did not result in any overstatements or superlatives regarding horsepower, torque, or other powertrain-related values at all. Furthermore, this has no effect on the impacted vehicles’ safety or emissions.

Toyota is reconfirming the information utilized in the certification of the impacted vehicles in collaboration with the appropriate authorities. Therefore, the dispatch of the impacted vehicles will also be temporarily halted in the case of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. (TKM).

New orders will still be accepted, though. We will thoroughly explain this condition to our customers for cars that have already been dispatched but have not yet been delivered to them. If customers choose to accept their vehicles, we will then handle registration and delivery.

According to the investigation, the 2.4-liter (found in the Toyota Innova Crysta), 2.8-liter (found in the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Fortuner), and 3.3-liter (found in the Toyota Land Cruiser) engines were the impacted models. For a thorough analysis of this issue’s nuances, go here.
